Yule Log

Day 4: Yule log

A chocolate swiss roll covered in chocolate icing. I made three different types. The messiest part was putting the icing on. I should have really done it in two parts but didn't really think it through. The icing was made my mixing transclucent liquid sculpey and brown fimo clay until it was a gooey gluey substance.

Gingerbread Houses

I haven't written a blog post for a while but I have been really busy making things. My favourite newest makes are the gingerbread houses. They take a lot of time to make and a lot of time to prepare.

I began making these around a month ago with a list of embellishments that I needed for the decoration. So I began making candy canes, snowmen, cookies etc. I may have overdone it slightly but as I have a catering background my old college tutor would be impressed with my mise-en-place!

I completed the houses over three days - Day one - I built the houses then cooked them. Day two - put the decoration onto the roof and cooked. Day three - put the houses onto the tray and decorated the gardens.

Each house is unique and individual as I didn't want to replicate any house. I've made twelve so far and I'm quite happy with my miniature gingerbread village.

Christmas is around the corner.

It's one of those weird quirks of anyone who makes things or sells things is that seasons and seasonal products tend to make an appearance at the wrong time of year. It's summer, sunny if not too warm and I'm thinking glitter, snow and good food that comes with December.

So I've started thinking of Christmas things as it's now June. I like the thought of making a gingerbread house or two - I bought a glass jar candle holder last year and think a a few mini houses would make a nice little scene in it, and making a few to sell of course!

So these are the first two I've made this year. I like the big roof on the first one which now resides in my dolls house. It's a big house 4cm x 4cm but as it's work in progress and my first practise piece it's fine.

After the big house came the smaller in scale and looking much better house -

As usual I have lots of plans and not enough time, but as I'm starting to think about things now in June I might be ready in six months time.

Pork Pies

Today as it's Bank holiday Monday there is a little bit of sunshine in the sky but it's still not as warm as it should be for the end of May. So I'm thinking of sunnier warmer days when I can pack a picnic and go for a long walk somewhere. A picnic has to be portable and able to withstand a few hours in a plastic tub and pork pies are perfect for this. So I made some in miniature of course!

A Thermos of coffee, cheese sandwich and slice of pork pie ready for eating al fresco.

Pork pie
I made a few pies but couldn't decide how to crimp the edges so I tried several different methods of doing it. I'm still not sure which one I prefer - the rustic one has a more handmade feel about it, but I do like a nice fluted edge,

Roast Chicken

I've made the roast chicken for the table, To be honest I think it is a very big chicken or a small turkey, my sizing was a little off. I hope everyone is hungry!
